Lifescape

A grading system designed and developed by Applied Studio, to encourage the reuse, re-purposing and recycling of products and materials.

Lifescape is a grading system designed and developed by Applied Studio, to encourage the reuse, re-purposing and recycling of products and materials.

It is based on the idea that a reused material will always be more sustainable than a virgin material – no matter how “sustainable” its credentials are.

Lifescape takes the life cycle of a material and adds the dimension of time to it by indicating its past, present and future lives.

Reclamation is normally focused on where the material has come from, lifescape, however, ensures there is an equal impetus on the future use of the material and whether it can be “reclaimed” again. This reduces the risk of the material reaching the end of its life and its embodied carbon being released – this improves the materials’ carbon risk trajectory.

Lifescape is also a visual aid to represent the “lifescape grade” of a material. Objects will have their lifescape diagram imprinted on them. This will act as part of their material passport, linking to online data that shows where the material has been and where its going. At a glance, it shows the material’s “lifescape” but it also encourages users to delve deeper into the details of the material.

This document is intended as an introduction to the idea of lifescape.

In its final iteration lifescape and the grading system would need to be quantifiable and could include elements such as; the quantity of embodied carbon saved and the financial implications of reusing, repurposing or recycling the material.
