We have new North American office based in Toronto

We have new North American office based in Toronto. To celebrate we designed a conceptual installation set in a Canadian winter landscape - produced as part of a competition.
.
The installation is called “Winter Fire” and is designed to provide a refuge from the elements by using those elements themselves. It is a positive, forward looking installation that harnesses nature and the environment.
.
The refuge is provided by a permeable grate supported by columns. The grate provides shade during sunlight, enclosure when snow settles on it and a dramatic experience when that snow melts to form suspended icicles. The scope of the refuge, provided by the elements, is the most significant when those elements are at their most extreme and the refuge most needed.
.
The grate protects beds of “dogwood” or “Winter Fire” (cornus sanguinea) which rise up like flames to meet the grates and, in certain conditions, to meet the icicles in
a suspended contrast of fire and ice. There are paths through the beds, protected overhead by solid sections in the grate, meaning visitors can safely walk through the installation.

➡️ Chevron granite tiles mirror the timber flooring and split the ground floor along the existing wall line, retaining a sense of the original character of the house.
.
➡️ Dark joinery with darkened bronze recessed handles provides a dramatic contrast for the kitchen and storage.
.
➡️ A dramatic frameless skylight sits over the refurbished stairs and provides a double height space up to the new, zinc clad mansard extension.
.
➡️ Minimally framed, large format glazing provides extensive views from the master bedroom (housed within the mansard extension) and a marble clad en-suite bathroom also benefits from a frameless skylight over the shower.

What could commercial and residential construction methods learn from each other? Could we adopt commercial construction methods to establish true, multi-generational living in new housing developments?

Residential construction methods - such as wiring, for example - are much more rigid and permanent than in commercial construction (in an office or restaurant). Even a small change to adapt the internal layout of a house is a relatively major undertaking. For example, if you want to divide a large reception room to create an additional bedroom, it would require almost a full strip out and redecoration. If you want to add a desk to a corner of a room that has no plug sockets or lighting – again, a disruptive rewiring is required.
.
This may sound radical, but I believe the effect of this permanence and lack of flexibility is significant in our communities today. It is difficult and expensive to adapt a home to a family’s inevitable changing needs over time and the obvious solution for many is to move rather than to adapt your existing home, and often this can lead to breaking down a community that doesn’t have enough time to establish itself.

The COVID-19 lockdown has given us an enforced period of reflection during which we have taken a bit of time to review the industry we work in – its standards and practices; in particular, the differences between the private residential and small scale commercial construction industries, and crucially, thinking about what each can learn from the other.

Applied Studio focuses on design led projects across a wide variety of typologies. The type of projects we do are focused on design, rather than any specific type of work and, as a result, our work covers areas ranging from private residential to commercial architecture including bars, offices and the odd boutique cinema.
.
Because of this, we’ve had significant insight into the different construction sectors and how they operate. The differences are, predictably, huge and encompass all areas of construction - from materials and details all the way through to procurement and management.
.
Both sectors have their advantages and disadvantages but, working in both, has led us to wonder if a combination of the two is possible; picking the best parts of how the different contractors work to create a perfect hybrid?
